Deitel Developer Series Cover Theme
Welcome to the DEITEL™ DEVELOPER
SERIES. At Deitel & Associates,
we write college programming textbooks, professional programming
books and e-learning materials, and we present instructor-led,
corporate-training courses. Over the last several years, the
programming community has embraced the Internet and the Web in every
aspect of software design, implementation and distribution. Internet
usage is becoming pervasive, allowing people worldwide to
communicate and interact easily and bringing social, cultural,
professional and political change. To capture the global import of
the Internet, we have selected "world landmarks" as the cover theme
for our new series. The first six covers depict famous places from
Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America and South America. We
will soon have an Antarctica cover as well. We hope that you will
enjoy the books in the DEITEL™ DEVELOPER
SERIES and that you will have
the good fortune to visit several of the landmarks shown on the
covers.
The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most widely
recognized symbols in Europe. The tower, which took two years to
build, was constructed for the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition to
commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. The
tower is named after designer Gustave Eiffel, who conceptualized the
structure to demonstrate modern engineering capabilities. Today, the
Eiffel Tower acts as a radio transmitter and is one of Europe’s most
popular tourist attractions.
Standing 1063 feet (324 meters) high, the Eiffel
Tower was the tallest structure in the world until 1929. Visitors
take elevators or climb 1,665 steps to the top. Due to high winds,
the top of the tower can sway up to 7 cm; however, the structure is
quite stable. Its total weight (10,100 tons) is dispersed between
four legs that form a square 125 meters on each side.
Painting and maintenance are ongoing activities.
It takes about 60 tons of dark brown paint to completely cover the
tower’s surface. A full repainting occurs once every five to seven
years.
Visitors can take guided tours, shop or enjoy a
meal at one of the tower’s restaurants overlooking Paris. More than
six million people visit the tower every year and almost 200 million
people have toured the site since it opened in 1889.
