Second Life is a 3-D virtual world created by its residents. Continent on the site includes people, entertainment, experiences and opportunity. Users can purchase a parcel of land to build a house or business. Residents retain the rights to their digital creations and they can buy, sell and trade with other residents. The Linden dollar (in-world unit-of-trade)is used for commerce on the site and can be converted to US dollars at online Linden Dollar exchanges. The Gizmoz service helps to create, customize, animate and share lifelike, 3D talking characters that can be used in digital communications. Faketown is a social networking site where avatars are used to represent users and interact in a virtual environment. Moji is a free intelligent messenger (the first real-time 3D instant messenger), where users create and customize 3D pets and characters that understand natural human language and can chat, interact and react with users in real time. The Moji functions like any other IM with file transfer, VOIP and emoticon features, and is interoperable with other instant messengers like MSN, AIM, GTalk and others. WeeWorld is a free social network where you meet and interact with WeeMees (a cartoon version of a user—avatar). WeeMees can be found on all the major social and chat networks, in email signatures and blogs. WeeMees can be created and updated in just a few clicks on WeeWorld or at any of our partner sites including AIM, Windows Live Messenger or Skype.
Voki is a free talking character that enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. Vokis can speak with a user's own voice which is added via microphone, upload, or phone. Voki can be used on a blog and in a social network profile (integration in instant messaging platforms is expected soon). Voki is a combination of "vox", which is Latin for voice, and "Loki", which, is a prankster character in Norse Mythology. Some of the things you can do with your Voki may cost money, such as downloading it to a phone. Voki is solely and exclusively for personal, non-commercial use. A commercial product called SitePal is available for a small monthly fee for business users.
The Avatarity site is a collection of avatars that can be used in online forums, on a web page or for a user profile. Categories include animals, comics, people, food, movies, television, artistic, games, music and more. The collection can be easily searched and the latest avatars are displayed on the home page.
Microsoft’s Ms. Dewey
Microsoft’s Ms. Dewey. This avatar can be used to search the web for information. Simply type a name, word, phrase, or topic in the search box and get a animated reply (often funny) and a list of search results. If you do not type in a query, the Ms. Dewey avatar taps on your computer screen and reminds you to type something in the search box.
Meez characters are 3D, that can move (e.g., strum a guitar, kick a ball, walk). Users can select skin tones, body types, add hairstyles, and dress up their avatar in different outfits and accessories. There are millions of potential combinations, so users can create a look that shows off their style. Meez characters can be used as personal IDs, for playing games, or in virtual worlds, and users can create YouTube videos around their avatars. Meez characters cab be used on any site or program that accepts digital images, such as MySpace or Live Journal.
