This introductory course is a continuation of the Client-side Internet Programming course. This five-day course teaches programmers with elementary Web programming experience how to program server-side Web pages using JScript and ASP .NET. This course also provides an introduction to the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and the Extensible Style Sheet Language (XSL). Both client-side and server-side applications of XML are introduced.

Topics covered include JScript, ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) .NET, SQL (Structured Query Language), ASP (Active Server Pages) .NET, Microsoft Internet Information Services (Windows 2000 and XP), Apache, XML (Extensible Markup Language) and XSL. The course offers extensive laboratory experience. Solutions are provided for laboratory exercises. 60% lecture and 40% laboratory exercises.

Prerequisites

  • General familiarity with Windows.
  • Ability to program at the level of "Client-side Internet and World Wide Web Programming." [Note: This is an introductory course intended for programmers with no ASP, or XML experience.]

Course Objectives

  • Use VBScript to write client-side scripts.
  • Implement Active Server Pages .NET using JScript to create dynamic content.
  • Use SQL and ADO to interact with databases from ASP.NET.
  • Use Apache to serve Web documents to clients.
  • Create custom markup using the Extensible Markup Language (XML).
  • Understand fundamental differences between HTML and XML.
  • Write simple XSL (Extensible Stylesheet Language) documents that describe how XML documents are transformed into HTML documents.
  • Create simple DTD (Document Type Definition) and Schema files that describe the grammar of an XML document.
  • Understand the fundamental differences between DTDs and Schema.
  • Write cookies on the client using ASP .NET.
  • Use session variables to maintain state across multiple ASP .NET pages.
  • Understand the fundamental role XML is playing in industry.
  • Understand the differences between Cascading Style Sheets and XSL.
